Smoke and heat detectors should be link because if one goes off the other follows to allow people in different locations in a house to hear the alarm.

Example; If your kitchen heat detector (NOT SMOKE) triggers which is located on the ground floor and you are on the top floor of your house with all the door closed half asleep with music blazing you would more then likely to hear the alarm which is interlinked to your landing detector then one that isn’t.
