Electrician Mistake #1
Electrician – Sockets Next To Sink
In a kitchen where the sink is located sockets should not be within 300mm.
This is a common mistake we see unqualified incompetent electricians do.
If you do have a socket outlet within 300mm of a sink we would highly
recommend you have it repositioned.
Electrician Mistake #2
Electrician – Wrong Lights In The Bathroom
When installing lights in a bathroom confirm that the light installed has the
correct IP rating.
This is a common mistake with spotlights, we see qualified and non qualified
electricians make this mistake often.
To avoid this confirm with the wholesalers when purchasing a light fitting that
it is the correct fitting for its location.
Electrician Mistake #3
Electrician – Fire Hoods
Spotlights give off a lot of heat when on, enough to cause plastic and other
materials to catch fire.
When having spotlights installed request fire rated spotlights or order fire
hoods separately to place above spotlight.
The most common areas to use fire hoods or fire rated spotlights are for any
spotlights directly under a room, area where insulation can touch the
spotlights and where wood “joist” are directly next to the spotlight.
Electrician Mistake #4
Electrician – No Main Bonding
When having work carried out, confirm that the main bonding to the gas and
water pipe are present and the correct size.
A 10mm earth wire attached to you main incoming earth wire has to be
clamped to your water mains, and gas pipe in majority of cases.
A competent electrician will be able to tell you if you need your bonding
installed or upgrading.
Electrician Mistake #5
Electrician – Sockets To Low
When having sockets installed confirm the height, if the socket is going really
low think, will you be able to plug an appliance into it without putting strain on
the appliance wire.
It is suggested that a socket outlet should not be lower then 450mm from the
floor to the bottom of the socket.
Electrician Mistake #6
Electrician – No Earth For Metal Lights And Metal Switches
If you have plastic light fittings or switches and want them changed for metal
ones, confirm you have a c.p.c in that circuit to attached it to.
A c.p.c basically is earthing, any electrical item which is metal should be earthed.
Not having a c.p.c and installing a metal light fitting or switch can result in
injury and even death.
Electrician Mistake #7
Electrician – No Sockets/Switches/Isolators Above Cooker
Avoid placing sockets/switches/isolators above a cooker, the heat will
damage them and the plug(s) which are plugged into the sockets.
Heat from the cooker can cause them to melt or heat causing the inside
conductors to melt which could cause a fire.
If your installation is like this we would highly recommend you have the
socket or isolator repositioned immediately.
